February is observed as Black History Month in the United States. The idea is to celebrate the culture and achievements of Black Americans, from the time the first 20 Africans arrived in the “New World” in 1619 as indentured servants, through over two hundred years of slavery and another hundred years of Jim Crow, to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s and to today, with an African American President in the White House.
